Can anyone describe in a few words what the automatic transfer switch does on my 36FL

Yours is a little different from mine but the principle is the same. When you have electricity from multiple sources you have to isolate each source. In your case you would either use shore power or your generator. The transfer switch will give the generator priority usually. When it senses power on the generator line, after a few seconds it will disconnect the shore power as a source and connect the generator as the source using a couple pair of contacts and magnetic coils. The same functions can be performed switching to an inverter using the 12v batteries for 110v power.

That's how I have my inverter wired. When Turned on it is wired into the side of the transfer switch that feeds the breaker that controls the kitchen side of the coach. Let's me power the fridge and also anything else on that slide if I want to.

Very important that heavy loads such as air conditioners are turned Off prior to the transfer switch operation.

Yep, that's a drawback to doing it this way. Have to make sure any high draw load is turned off.
