Champion 3100 generator

I bought a Champion 3100 watt generator from Home Depot for $805 with free shipping and a unincorporated tax rate. I filled it with gas and oil; pulled the starter rope and it started on first pull. It weighs abut 80lbs and runs 1/2 throttle at 58db. Its pretty light and quite. I will give it a go and see how it does for me.

Does it fit in the front storage area where the OEM generator would go? Not that I'd run it from there, thinking more from a transport perspective.

As I don't have the 5er yet; I don't know if it will fit. I recall the gen area is about 20 inches wide and about 30 inches of door area by 6 feet wide. I might have to raise the gen a little to put the pull starter above the door opening.

Just be courteous where you run it, they are not the quietest on the block.

You last email sounded to me that you planned to run it in the compartment. Poor choice. The gensets mounted in the Redwoods have exhaust pipes to run the exhaust away from the compartment. CO could find it's way into your unit from there.

I thought I would build an exhaust set up like the factory installed unit done.

I am always nice to people that are nice to me. It will be used only when off grid.

Do they have to be nice first?

You won't have the airflow in the front either. The Onans have mechanical ventilation that draw from the bottom and exhaust out the bottom for engine cooling, and its all sealed through the base at the floor cutouts. The Onan case itself is its own primary containment for noise, heat and airflow, with the cabinet being the second dead airspace enclosure.

An open air-cooled engine wont have that. It should be run outdoors in the open. Would recommend you just run it on the ground or in the pickup.

I agree Brad.
Running an open air-cooled generator inside the gen box is a recipe for disaster.

Your front cord hookup is IDEAL for the front gen in a pickup or on the ground Ken!

Yes,
I have known some, in hot temps to run their generators in the pickups while traveling....powering the rig and running an ac to keep pets and the rig cool.

Front plug does give some flexibility.
