Thanks for the pic Dave! Does that 'T' or 'H' allow for expansion in that area and prevent future problems?

I just noticed yesterday while waxing our 36re, that it's cracking straight down. The trailer isn't painted so the crack will be about half behind the vinyl if/when it goes all the way down. It would only be about 5". Not looking forward to anymore dealings with the factory. The only up side was a quick turnaround. And "quick" was very evident in the work done and debris in the trailer.

WOW! That is scarey. I've never seen anything like that before but if were my trailer the factory would be fixing it.

My anglish gets better over time and a few drinks

Dave, it appears your fix was strictly cosmetic. Nothing was done underneath. Am I correct? I think mine is only the skin also. After another look, about 80% of mine, if it cracks all the way, will be behind the vinyl. I'm not sure I'm going to do anything with it in the short term.

The dealer I purchased from is about 250 miles from home. We are scheduled to stop there on the way home from Florida in 10 days for the annual inspection. Also our pantry door has split at the center hinge. I will show them the crack but unsure if I'll have anything done just yet.

Mark,
since yuou are going there anyway,
how about sending pictures to them and redwood ahead of time to at least let them 'think' about it ?

Maybe someone may conjure up a solution for you...

Before we had the Redwood, we had a 2006 Carriage, It had a crack in the same place that looked the same as the one in the picture. It was that way for several years before we traded and never went any further that what it was . Apparently there must be some reason for this common problem, but I don't know what it is. May somebody that has this problem can ask the factory personal when they talk to them.

I would be afraid of water penetrating the crack.

Mine was done at the factory so I don't know if it was just on the surface or not. I can say though that it worked because last year I pulled that trailer around 26,000 miles over some pretty rough roads without a problem.

Its common among all brands. Redwood seems to be one of the few that figured out too late you need a stress cut there. Just picked mine up at the Dealer and noticed almost all of the other brands had the same moulding installed on Dave's.

The forward frame is probably the most vulnerable to flex, as it is the smallest I-beam and has to deal with the heaviest stress from road heave while towing. Just a small deflection up on that frame, and the weakest point in the wall is going to bear the brunt.

Dave,
Did the crack occur on your coach before you changed out to the TrailAir Tri-Glide pin box..

I have pulled our 36RL about 10,000 miles and haven't had the crack issue occur, but, I have had the TrailAir Tri-Glide pin box since day one. Thought I might break a lot of things last summer when driving/towing across Arkansas. Roughest roads that I have ever seen.

We will be stopping at the dealer as we pass by on the way home. We've been in Florida since Jan. 5th. We wouldn't be able to either wait or leave it at that time. The wall is only 4 1/2" high at that spot and 3 1/4" of that is behind vinyl. Only about 1 1/4" exposed.

We had a Trailer Saver hitch with the Carriage from day one and still got the crack. I think it is like Atom Ant says, its just the way their put together. That area is where the frame goes from horizontal to vertical and the weight tends to cause a little flexing.

We also have the Trailer Saver hitch from day one. And funny that you say AR has very ruff roads because that is were ours happened last year on our way to the rally. We had appointment at the service center for inspection and a couple of little things before the rally. This crack was added to the list and fixed. Made the rally on time.

I never had a crack. I guess the service center put the "H" piece in as a precaution.

This just reinforces my belief that this is most times only a cosmetic problem. If I don't have it fixed, I'll be sure to see there is no water intrusion.

Yes, we had the same issue. The pin box needed to be replaced. There is a recall on that issue.

I didn't get a chance to protect from water with out crack --- and given the storms we went through can almost BET there was some 'intrusion'

A recall ?!?! Has anyone been notified of that ?!?!?!??!

Pin Box

We contacted the manufacturer in Indiana and was told there was a recall. We were not told there was a recall until I was persistent. Hope there is not much damage on your unit. We noticed ours right away and had it fixed. Good Luck!!
