Electrical question uon

Been at the beach for 4 days now with no problems.

About an hour ago, i lost most of my 110 outlets, front AC …

Went to my Hughes Autoformer and the top light is lit RED -= line 1 voltage

Thinking my pedestal is badI ran my cord to the spot next to me…. Same issue???

Could my transfer switch be bad?

Found the issue..

I have the 50amp inlet on the rear corner of my coach, the stock cord that came with was way too stiff.

I got a plug that went into the coach and had the 50amp male on the other end.. I then made a 50’ cord out of SOOO cord that is real flexible….

One leg at that plug was burnt up… I dis not get too far into it yet, but I am assuming that since I made the cord, I didn’t tighten something….

I ran to Walmart and found a 30 amp RV cord that I plugged into the pedestal until I can get to an RV dealer tomorrow and get a new 50 amp cord

I had the same issue with the shore power receptacle at the rear of the coach. The neutral conductor was burned. Went to Camping World and bought a replacement.

I've used this since our coach was new. Takes the downward strain off the shore power cord. Something to consider.

Thanks Jim…. I picked up a brand new, 50 amp x 30’ long RV cord and 10’ @50 amp extension cord and all is well…. Each has. Light indicator to tell you if the circuit is good, all my lights are GREEN..

I just purchased that adapter that you posted above from Amazon…. thank you

Had something similar happened to me on our recent trip. The extension cord with the female 50 amp plug that plugs into the RW socket was hard to remove at a campsite, one of the hot legs on the female plug was burnt. The male plug on the RW was OK. I ran on 30 amps during the run home and found a replacement 50 amp replacement female plug on Amazon. I suspect that there was some dirt or a bug in the female plug, some feathery goo came out during disassembly.

Joe,

Have you been twisting the plug about 1/2" once its all the way in? They will not have 100% contact unless they are twisted , then I turn the lock ring down snug.

Hey Mark,

Yes, I always twist the connector then lock it down with the ring.... I will be off the beach tomorrow and be able to post some pictures of the failed connector in the plug....

I use both spray and brush on DeoxIt. I learn this from the late RV Doctor Gary Bunzer

They look like Camco ends ? I would say the set screw on the wire may have been the problem , The wires need to be twisted and would be better with a tinned wire or solid crimped pin over the stranded wire. fine strands like to jump out of the set screw .

FYI the Hubble cord ends are much better then the Camco but much more money.

Rehoboth beach?

Looks like a bad connection on male prong from what I can see of in the picture.could have been a dirty female socket on the pedestal ?

Had a similar problem in May with the same Camco male plug. Two of the screws attaching the wires to the blades inside the 50 amp plug came loose and shorted. This resulted in 240V to some of the outlets and 6V to other outlets.Unfortunately I turned on the convection microwave oven before realizing this problem and immediately burned up the electronics. Costly failure to replace oven but could have been worse.

*** update ***

I should have updated earlier, but been on the beach enjoying life..

The Supervisor of Delaware State Parks paid me a visit on Thursday inquiring about my electrical issue.. He said the electrician got him up to date with my issue, but he wanted to make sure I was still ok..

HE also told me that since their worker told them that it was a faulty receptacle that caused the issue, they were going to reimburse me for the $300.00 I spent to buy a new cord and 10' @ 50amp extension cord.

I told him that was not necessary, but thanked him and accepted the refund !
