Onan Generator Switch

Hey everyone. Our Redwood is at the shop getting some much needed maintenance done to include an Onan 5500 LP generator installed. Looking forward to not having to drag out the twin Honda’s and hooking them up every time we dry camp. Question is has anyone installed a second generator start switch near their bed? I got to thinking that would be perfect if I didn’t have to get out of bed to start / stop the generator. Any issues with having two switches? Thanks everyone. Your knowledge on everything Redwood and RV’s is amazing. Be safe.

Even better would be a WiFi switch so you could use your phone anywhere. I’ll bet that exists

My 2020 has the InCommand system .... with that system, I can start the generator with my phone, as long as it is linked by bluetooth..

Since you don’t have the In Command system I would recommend calling Onan and see what their suggestions would be. They might have an easy way to tie in another set of controls to start and stop your generator from your bedroom location.

I have the Onan 5500 from factory install.

I wired my house so I could also use it in case of power failure.

I found that Onan makes an accessory which is a remote start/stop switch and is activated wirelessly by a provided key FOB. It’s powerful enough that it can be used from inside my house 50’ away.

Sorry I don’t have the model number but am sure it’s on their website.

Adding an additional switch is no problem.

I’ll do some research on the remote start. Sounds promising without having to install the command center.

That’s good news. Why get out of bed if I don’t have to.

Shouldn't be a big deal to parallel the switch. Onan uses a momentary ground signal to start and stop. You will need a 3 conductor wire and a single pole double throw momentary switch. Or just buy another Onan remote panelband parallel it in with the other one.
