Protecting the stairs from pets!

Hello everyone, My wife and I just purchased our first redwood and we have 2 big black labs... We were wondering if anyone had any good ways to protect the wood steps between the living room leading up the the bathroom from the dogs scratching them as they go up and down. We do not want to staple/glue/screw anything into the steps. We were thinking of a heavy rubber mat but still think that might slide around... Any tips would be appreciated! Thank you!

We use the heavy shelving material you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot. We just use the best masking tape you can buy (3M Blue) at the top so that it will come back up without leaving a residue or coming apart. We replace the tape every so often and vacuum stairs off.

Works for now.
