Pump suction strainer cracked

We were pulling out to go camp over the 4th of July weekend and noticed a huge puddle under the camper. At first thought I pictured a black or grey tank rupture since there was water dripping around where the drain pipe comes out. After deciding to pull the underbelly and got what appeared to be fresh water in my face, I checked the fresh water tank level and it was empty, full the night before. So then I thought I'd ruptured my fresh water tank and after checking there was no water leaking with the hose connected to the city water connection, I re-attached the under belly and we went on our merry way. While at the campground I stuck my head in the access door and noticed a water dripping from the pump suction strainer. We got home yesterday and today I partially filled the fresh water tank and started the pump and sure enough the strainer was leaking and sure enough it is cracked. It appears it also drains the tank by siphon since it drained the tank overnight. Since the strainer does not get anti-freeze when winterizing I guess I'll have to remember to open the cap and drain the water out, probably clean the strainer then. Must have been lucky over the last 7 years of winterizing to not have it crack sooner. Ive ordered a new one from Amazon.

Not really needed if you have a filter when filling with fresh water. I eliminated mine long ago. It really doesn’t do that much.

the suction filter is there to prevent small particles from getting into the pump and causing water to flow back into the tank. there is an internal check valve that could possibly be the main reason why the pump company "require" the suction side strainers. a few owners have reported there fresh holding tanks overflowing when they are connected to the city side only.
