I think it's the other way around..........they used to be maintenance free! I remember back in the 60's when my parents owned 2 different Shasta campers and they were truly maintenance free! One has to remember, however, that they didn't have all the equipment and extras that todays campers/rv's have. The only issue my dad had was a frozen pipe which split and had to be repaired. He forgot to winterize!! It was an easy fix because all the pipes were accessible from the inside of the camper. Sometimes I think that basic is the way to go..............but then I think......NO WAY!!!!!!!!

I suppose from some perspective he could be right, the amount of preventative maintenance is greatly reduced over the years, even on the tow vehicles. But that is far offset by the increased need to repair things on a daily basis, or rebuilding things that weren't done right at the factory. Either way you're going to need a tool box.

Rick, I agree! Our first camper after we were married was a NEW 1979 21 ft Fleetwood Wilderness. No slides, very simple, but we thought we were living large. Never gave us a bit of problems but that was before our throw away society. Back then even the TVs were designed to be fixed. Only maintenance was putting tar on the seams of the roof once a year and repacking the wheel bearings.

Well Fleetwood lost it as far back as 92, because my Wilderness was a pile of junk.

They could be free of a lot of maintenance if the folks putting them together would take some of that old days pride in their work, but nowadays they get paid either way unfortunately.

Forgot to mention, on mine the maintenance is free cause I do all myself, they couldn't do it right the first time so no second chances.

We owned a Fleetwood Mallard TT for 7 years. Lived in it full-time for one year, and used it for weekend outings extensively. Did not have one issue with the unit during that time...not even a flat tire. That was our first experience with an RV, and we assumed they were all pretty much maintenance free...how wrong we were!! Owning two other TT's and the Redwood since then brought us back to reality! Either they aren't manufactured as well...or we were just lucky with the Fleetwood!

Would I buy another Redwood? Probably, but not a this time because we plan on keeping this one for a long time, I don't think there is no rv out there that do not have issues, best thing is to educate yourself on your rv and if someone posts a problem check your rv out to see if it is not going to happen to yours. I believe this has prevented major catastrophes or if they do happen you know what to do.

Dave..........these RV's are maintenance free.....................until you break'em!!

No, they're maintenance free, just open the wallet and let someone take the money out to do the maintenance, thus maintenance free for you.

YogiBear......I just joined the forum and saw our post. We're dealing with Colerain in Indy right now. Would you recommend them? Who was your sales person? The sales guy we got really doesn't know anything about the Redwoods and has to go and ask his supervisor literally every question we ask. I've heard their service dept. is good.....do you have any input there? We've heard great things about Tiara in Elkhart, but we live in Indy. Colerain would be a more convenient location for us, but from what I read the dealer is EVERYthing! Can you please share your experience with Colerain?

We had to help a couple pull their new SOB fiver up a hill at a park because the dealer told them their 1/2 ton pickup would have no problem towing it.
