Broken Frame Repair

My 2013 FB36 was recently put on consignment. During the inspection I was informed that the frame was broken at the bedroom slide-out. The attached pictures show the external crack located at the forward corner of the slide-out and the kingpin dislocated from the lower panel.

They suggested filing an insurance claim for damage. That claim was denied as a manufacturing defect.

Is Redwood responsible for a 2013 model? The repair is $7,000.

My '13 FB also had this crack that RW put a piece of H shaped trim on it, the frame was not cracked just a stress Crack in the fiber glass, no problems in the next 5 years.
I'd bet that if you look at any 5th of that size you'll notice either the trim or the crack. If it doesn't gap open considerably when connected to the truck I'd say it's only a stress crack, if it were more serious you would've noticed other issues before now.

I agree with Danny.. I HAD an older Montego Bay by KZ that had that stress crack, KZ cut out the crack and applied a piece of trim...

Below are my 2015 Redwood and 2020 Redwood, BOTH came with that piece already on!

Update

Thank you both for the prompt response. The claims adjuster is forwarding to me the report and photos. I'm told the report confirms frame problems and not cosmetic issue. Also seeking to confirm why manufacturing defect and not damage incurred through travel.

Just curious?
Is this information coming from an inspector for prospective buyer? Are they just finding something to negotiate a lower price from you?
I try believe if it were a frame issue you would notice flexing while connected to the truck.

Insurance Adjuster

I filed a claim on my insurance policy for the damage. It was the insurance claims adjuster that said there is frame damage resulting from a manufacturing defect and not an incident resulting from the roadway.

My agent is now involved to have the adjuster explain how that means was determined.

My new Grand Design has the trim molding you folks are describing. I hear what you're saying. It just feels like I'm between a rock and a hard place.

our RL38 has the same plastic trim part right at the slide corner . A good friend of mine has a Keyston Fusion with a crack that Keystone is warranty the fiberglass, his unit is 2.5 years old and it right at the slide opening corner. Not A cracked frame just stress crack in the fiberglass, he has about 10,000 miles on his fusion ( all with a non-cushioned hitch or pin box).

There is a procedure to measure pin deflection and determine if the frame has failed. Do a google search and it probably will come up. Involves taking several measurements both unhooked and then hooked up to truck.

Had a substantial frame repair done on our 2013 36RL last year, we were getting deflection and separating around the closure of the wall and horizontal section around the pin on the roadside. $6,000 CDN, the insurer also denied the claim, manufacturing defect. Lots of steel replaced in/around the pin and near the lift on the roadside. Poor quality (not thick enough steel) by Lippert. I believe the crack you are talking about is the start of this problem as it was on ours.

Yes, Lippert builds the Frames, BUT they build to the MFR's specs. Like almost any business Lippert builds what their Customers want, if that's cheap and dirty that's what they get. Probably why some Lippert made frames never have an issue and others are crap.

Do the pin deflection test. Go from there.

We had the same problem with our king pin separating from the lower plate. Our RV tech called Lippert and they said they,ve had that problems with some. I believe they should have issued a recall. Ours is a 2014 36- FB. Lippert sent out a new pin box directly free of charge. Our rV tech installed and all is well.

Does anyone know where to get the H trim they are using to cover these cracks? I have one on my 2012 36FL under the front slide. I am in the process of taking the bottom off around the hitch to see if I have any frame damage under there. I was going to try and fix the crack while I am at it. Seems to me the trim would be the best that way it shouldn't crack again
