I would bet that line is for both ice makers and water in the door dispensers. It very well could effect the taste, even though it shouldn't. There is some kind of liner inside that stainless cover.

The water line in made of smoe type of plastic or rubber, and the frig has a decent water filter. In fact the service guys ran antifreeze thru filter and it took the red color out of the water, but it didnt last too long after that, they gave me a new filter to be installed once I dewinterized.. I think the braided line is the way to go! I am waiting till I "Have too" to replace it, wish I had an exterior door to serive the frig, would make things alot simplier...

The icemaker waterline also supplies water to refrig's that have water dispensers. I installed the braided stainless steel line and I have not noticed a difference in the smell or taste of the water. I also worked at Lowe's for several years. I am not aware of any icemaker waterlines or any water supply lines complaints for taste or smell. IMO, the quality of the water passing through the line would be the issue...not the water line.
