Outside Cabinet Hinges

Just a warning and a little that I learned about the outside hinges.

Our factory outside TV is actually in the basement cabinet, so the door opening and staying open is pretty critical to enable that function. We were having trouble with it staying open in the colder weather, so the Dealer replaced the struts with one side being a heavier pressure - snap goes the hinge.

Our 2014 (May 2013) cabinets have these hinges - which are three across on the larger doors. They are thin and easily broken.

SOME of the newer ones actually have a full length hinge and some of those have full strength lifts.

SOME of the newer ones have similar to the original, but with a much beefier hinge, as shown here by our replacement hinge

In the end, if you have our style hinge - be careful replacing the struts with a higher lift. If you do happen to break one, these replacement hinges fit perfectly and they will actually handle the higher lift pressure struts.

I might add that between Redwood and our Dealer Windish (Kevin, new Warranty Dept) we are getting along wonderfully and I have painted parts and fenders and I'm able too install myself and no down time at the shop.

OK, so where do we get the replacement beefier hinges? I've already had one break and it was replaced at the Service Center when it was up there for warranty work. I would like to have a couple of spares just in case.

That part seems to be a mystery - first the Dealer said they couldn't be had without ordering the door, then he got in hinges, and a door with hinges. You would have to ask the Dealer or Redwood. Unfortunately I don't know the brands of the doors the were using, have used, and are using now, but I did hear Kinro.

If you look at the inside of your doors you should find a label telling you the size and item number and the manufacturer. I do believe mine are all Kinro which I believe is a LCI company.

Believe it or not, mine are blank, like they were bleached out. Dealer had a hard time even figuring out the door size

Cargo Door Hinge Broken

Both hinges on my cargo door cracked in half. Left side broke first then later on the same day the right broke. I obtained a piece of aluminum from a local welding shop, then attached the broken hinge pieces with 4 pop rivets to the aluminum. Cut the aluminum piece to same size as the hinge. Drilled new holes in the aluminum piece to match the original hinges screw holes. Reinstalled. This is only a band aid until the new hinges arrive from LCI.... Lippert Corp. Inc.

Did those 2 screws go in before , or after it cracked in half?? It kinda looks like the rivets failed , and the hinge had 2 holes drilled into it.. Between that and the screws being tightened , that may have been enough to crack??

The screws were there before. Behind the cracked hinge and I added a solid piece of aluminum plate. Then added rivets to hold both pieces together. The rivets do not go into the door panel. Grounded down the back side of the rivet so the hinge would fit back in place.

We had to have one of our basement doors replaced due to a hinge problem. Can't recall why the door had to be replaced, but I know the new one had to be painted when it came to the dealer (and now that paint is chipping). I also remember Vaughan doing something with rivets and such while I held the door for him. He's been working the Hershey show all we, but I mentioned to him that there were a couple posts on here that I wanted him to comment on. The other was the GFCI thread. At the same time I noticed a burning smell, we lost outlet power on the island. Our search eventually let us to a badly charred GFCI in the bathroom. I'm hoping he still has the photos of that.

One of mine also broke. I went to my local RV dealer (also a Redwood Dealer) and they had two on the shelf. Actually the parts guy said they came from Keystone. Atom Ant clued me into the fact that the new hinges are made stronger. So far so good.

If you can get a lucky find like Blenhardt, try to use these as a replacement:

Mine are holding up well, I have one heavy strut and one light strut that is also working well and holds the door up in the cold, but I did just have to re-drill in the strut to the door because the screws are stripping out. Several of the cabinets are doing that.

I guess I'm a bit confused, neither the doors on our 12 or this 16 have major basement or propane door hinges that look like whats being posted. Ours are the two piece sections that slide together with a nylon or some type of material inserted and screwed in place to keep the door centered.
