Hwy 54 out of Wichita to Hwy 70 @ Alamogordo NM

Heading to AZ late October and this is our first trip out West. Wondered if anyone knows what 54 is like or of better to just stay on the Interstate. No time constraints, just wondering best route to take. Thanks for any suggestions.

Scott&Phyllis, sorry I didn't see this sooner. We just went that way this summer. Left Wichita on Hwy 400, went up to Dodge City. Then down to Clayton, NM. In that area, Hwy 54 was a good route. Hwy160 is fine. Enjoy.

Fred, thanks for the information. As I mentioned we are thinking of taking hwy 54 the majority of the way. Just worried there might be too many small towns and stops along that route. Sounds like that shouldn't be a problem.

There actually is not much of anything. Make sure you fill up, it's pretty desolate until you get through Oklahoma.
