In June/July either route would work, right now you'll have to go alone, too DAMN cold!!!

Hwy 160 has Wolf Creek pass. Hwy 50 has Monarch Pass. I would expect 50 to give you less problems with snow, etc. Might not be an issue right now though.
I've technically only driven Hwy 160 with the Redwood from Pagosa Springs to Monticello, UT. That section isn't bad at all. Drove the rest of it years and years ago in only a truck.
With all the travelling you do you should pickup the "Mountain West Directory". http://www.mountaindirectory.com/
I've got one of these and use it all the time to plot my travels. That and a good Atlas showing low height bridges and you should have all your bases covered!

My SOB Dealer was in Durango, so it was pretty common for me to take 160 over La Veta and over Wolf Creek in the middle of winter. Not saying I always made it I turned back on Wolf Creek once when truckers had to chain up, and I turned back on La Veta once because of incoming snow above 8,000 ft. Just watch the weather reports.

Dido, we've pulled Wolfe Creek three times this past year on 160. No problems, but like stated above respect Mother Nature. Just a note from the summit heading west gear down early the image from the driver's seat can be at time a bit nerve racking.

If you come back I 70 take I 40 through Winter Park and Granby and stop in Grand Lake. We ride ATVs and will be there Memorial weekend, June and July. ATV trails open up June 15th. Winding River Campground in Grand Lake, you ride right out of the campground. Beautiful area with lots of moose and elk.
