Shane, I am by far not the expert but work at a new car/truck dealership (wont say which one so we don't feed the truck war beast). I am just repeating what the manufacturer warranty rep told me about the towing restriction. He said that the 3.73 is more important than the 4.11. I do know the towing capacity is greater with the 4.11.

Has nothing to do with how you break in the engine. I agree whole heartily with running the engine hard. I just put a new engine in my airplane and the manufacture procedure is to run it as hard as possible until broken in. About 10 to 15 hrs IIRC.

BTW I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night

Larry - different topic - what do you fly ? Piper guy comes from the Piper Arrow I owned with a couple partners for almost 13 years. Have about a 1000 hrs.
Kind of got out of flying, medical and BFR current but haven't flown for quite a while.

When I bought my F350 it started towing the Redwood with 7 miles on it. When I got the MH I asked the cummins rep and he said to drive it as hard as I could for the break in period. He also warned me against synesthetic oils until 30,000 miles.

Vaughn, don't know what BFR in aviation terms is, but in the pipelime industry it's "big friggin' rock", just FYI.

If you are running stock tune, then the injection pump timing and injection pressure is set up to be idiot resistant. On hard pulls through you still need to be careful of high EGTs. If these run high chronically during about the first 30-50 thousand miles the over all life of the engine is shortened substantially.

I was referring to stock set-ups but you raise an excellent point given the number of tuners out on the market today. A good tuner will allow you to set an alarm for max. EGT.

Vaughn,

I was very fortunate back in 2000 to find a low time Cessna 182 with a perfect airframe. I flew out the time on the engine in 11 years and decided that I had better do my upgrades while I am still making wages.

I did a complete interior a few years back and recently upgraded the engine to a Pponk (275 HP carbureted 520) with a 3 blade prop.

Climbs like a homesick angel!

While there are Sexier aircraft out there, with the upgrades, and the fact that I do owner assisted annuals and my own maintenance, it fits me perfectly.

I had a hunch from seeing your posts that you were also an aviator.

Nice bird !! I have about 55 hours in a 182 and always loved them. Fly a lot of right seat in a good friends Cirrus SR22 and buy him breakfast.
Flew to Oshkosh nine times and camped under the wing on the North Forty. If you haven't been ~ go.

You coming to the Rally ??

Can't do the rally. Too far to travel when still working every day. I flirted with flying to Tucson to at least get to the maintenance classes, but unfortunately not enough takers so cancelled with the other ones. I do think a Las Vegas rally would be well attended.

My new Redwood is currently just a luxury camper for me for the next few years. Other than a weekend shakedown trip, we have not used it yet. Tomorrow however, we are taking it to Moab (Utah) with two other couples in their RV's and ATV's for 9 days!!

Putting a blue tarp over my wing at Oshkosh has been on my "Bucket List" for several years. I know why you did it 9 times.

Hope to bump into you on the road sometime.
