Traveling after Christmas

We have never traveled long distances around Christmas , this year will be different. My father in law passed away a month ago and we are taking my mother in law back home to the west coast of Florida..
We will not be towing as we will stay with her for a few days ,,then drive back to PA.. What should I expect from the traffic flows leaving Saturday after Christmas??

I'm sure traffic will be light with beautiful sunny weather - especially on I-95 in NJ...

Joe - get off around Richmond and head over to 301 and then take it all the way up and through Annapolis and onto I 97 and then over the Key bridge.

You want to avoid Washington at all costs and it starts to build up way south of Fredericksburg

Send me an email or call if you need more info. When we came back from Tampa after thanksgiving we found the 301 trick. Good road and not real heavy traffic.

Thanks Vaughan , Being an old truck driver , I was doing 301 for many years until the last few ... We are leaving around 6AM Saturday so I think that the Philly/Wilmington/Baltimore and DC traffic should still be on the light side...
When I usually leave at that time for my trips to Richmond , I can make the draw bridge in about 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 hrs depending.. ( non towing) ..
We are planning on running down to Savannah , not sure what the day will bring??

You'll probably be ok .......... if you have an EZ Pass, get in the Express lanes as soon as you can after the drawbridge. Even on a Saturday or Sunday the traffic is crazy south of DC. We went to Quantico a few weeks ago on a Saturday and if I hadn't gotten into the Express it would have been at least an hour in traffic.

I LIVE in the EZ pass lanes! I made the trip from PA to Richmond last Thursday in all that rain... left PA at 10:30 AM . . . got into Richmond at 2:45 PM... I'll take 4-1/4 hrs ANY DAY...

I will say that traveling along 95 in either direction in that area has gotten far better over the last few years.. IF you have the right timing that is ! There was a time that no matter what time you got there , you were screwed !

Once you get to the intersection of I-95 and I-26 southbound, plan for stop and go traffic. We go to Hilton Head almost every year and for some reason you will go 65MPH for a few miles and then stop, and do it all over again and again until we get to our exit.

Thanks for that... I can hope that we will be getting around that area by 7pm or so... hopefully it will be lighter
Truthfully , the stretch of 95 that I was/am expecting issues will be NC and SC only..

When we would take 95 all the way headed South for the life of me I could never figure out why traffic was always backed up north of Fredericksburg for about 20 miles. Must just be congestion due to the exits.
2014 was the first time I did not hit traffic there. Anyone know what changes or was I just lucky.

I think that a combination of things happened.... people stopped going that way due to frustration... and now because they added the EZ pass lanes its a joy at times.. below is my last trip around DC...

***update***

We left the day after Christmas from Pennsylvania at 7:00 AM.... We had a great trip going until we got south of Quantico VA then the bottom dropped out...it was stop and go ALL the way to Savannah...it took us 16 hours without towing...

The next day we left Savannah for Sarasota at 7:30 Am and did not get there till 4:00 PM..

Let's hope all those folks are not going North on New Years Day like us..:-(

On the bright side , it was 86 and sunny when we arrived with the forecast showing 85 as a high all week !!

At that rate, Joe, it might be worth cutting west on I26 and then cross country and some good 2 lanes up to 81 and then over .....
Or say "bag it" and stay in Sarasota another week ........

Air travel on the 26th wasn't too bad except the Denver airport was delaying flights to & from everywhere, "staffing problems" which to me meant the SOBs didn't want to work. Made it back safe & sound, but wish they'd quit making those airplane seats smaller, was very uncomfortable!!

Yes Vaughan , I said that to Lori...we would see how the traffic was moving in GA and southern SC... 26 to 77 to 81 is a nice route , normally a bit out of the way for us but nice

We made it back to our Redwood in Tallahassee FL after a few days of R&R in a Log Cabin in the North Georgia Mountains.
I turned off the water and the hot water heater off before we left, everything was good when we got back.
Now for some vehicle and Redwood maintenance / service this week before heading to St Augustine on Jan 10th then on to Tampa on Jan 18th.

Rob, if you don't make it to Tampa until the 18th, you're going to miss the Tampa RV Super Show!!

Return trip update

Well , the return trip was so much easier than the trip south...

We left Sarasota at 6:30am on New Years Day and went 75-301-10-295-95 all the way up to Glen Allen VA ( just north of Richmond ) .. We drove 850 miles and arrived at 7:30 pm...

Yesterday we left Glen Allen at 6:30am and pulled into the house in Buck County PA ( just north of Philly ) at 10:30 am... Took 95 to 395 to 295 to Balto/wash parkway?? To 895 and back on 95 north of Baltimore...

In comparison , the week before it took us a total of 22 hrs. To go south... Compared to 15 hrs coming home

*** remember that I was NOT towing ...
